In a country which is accustomed to looking at politicians from a pessimist’s view, there are a few handpicked politicians who still rise the hope. One such ray of hope is our current Defence Minister of India, Manohar Parrikar. This phenomenal politician was chosen by Prime Minister Modi as the Defence Minsiter and has made immense progress in his role. Born on December 13, 1955, the Minister turns 60 today. Here are seven facts you probably did not know about him.

1. Manohar Parrikar believes in putting the country first
Just a month before he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Goa in 2000, he lost his wife in a battle against cancer. The brave minister went on to manage the entire province while parenting two teenage boys.

2. Manohar Parrikar’s educational qualification
He is the first IITian to become an Indian State’s Chief Minister. He was a metallurgical engineer by profession before entering politics. He was also a batch mate of Nandan Nilekani, former chairman of the Unique identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

3. The Aam Aadmi
Our defence minister is known to travel only by economy class. During his service as the CM of Goa, he declined the offer of shifting to a larger house and proffered to stay in his own house. He also never upgraded to a fancier vehicle in this time.

4. Manohar Parrikar’s preferred mode of transport
When Parrikar served as the CM of Goa, his proffered mode of transport for reaching the Goa Vidhan Sabha was his bicycle. The minister was also regularly seen traveling by public transport in the state.

5. Manohar Parrikar’s Political career
Parrikar has been one of the cleanest ministers in Indian Politics. With no scams of corruption charges under his name he is one of the rare gems that still exist in India.

6. Awards and Accolades
In 2012, Parrikar won the CNN IBN Indian of the year award in the category of politics for his immense and selfless contribution to the state of Goa.

7. A Good Samaritan
Parrikar is a kind-hearted and well meaning individual and he has proved this point time and again. This year he urged the people of Goa to cut down his birthday spending and instead donate towards the Chief Minister of Goa Chennai Relief Fund.
