Amit Shah for Gujarat, J P Nadda as BJP chief; message goes viral on WhatsApp

Sections in the BJP also wish the party’s national president Amit Shah to take over the reins of the state to revive the saffron party’s sagging fortunes.

New Delhi, Aug 2: A day after Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel announced her decision to quit, speculations are rife on who will succeed her ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls. Names like Nitin Patel, who holds the portfolios of Health, Medical Education, Family Welfare, Road and Building and Capital Project and Vijay Rupani, the newly elected state unit head of the party, are doing rounds. There are reports that BJP national president Amit Shah will return to his home state as the chief minister.

Amit Shah will become the next chief minister of Gujarat, claimed a viral post on WhatsApp. The post also claimed that the swearing-in ceremony of Amit Shah would take place on August 5. “Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda will replace Amit Shah as BJP president,” said the viral post.

Sections in the BJP also wish the party’s national president Amit Shah to take over the reins of the state to revive the saffron party’s sagging fortunes. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also claimed that BJP would pick Shah as Gujarat’s chief minister. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief quoted “sources” according to whom the Bharatiya Janata Party will replace her with party president Amit Shah.

In a surprise move, Patel, who was in the midst of several challenges, announced her decision to step down yesterday, saying it was time for new leadership to take over as she was soon going to turn 75. As soon as she made her decision public by taking to Facebook, Shah said in New Delhi that her successor will be chosen by the party’s parliamentary board, which, according to sources, will meet soon.

The BJP for the first time in the post-Narendra Modi era in Gujarat has faced a tough challenge from its opponents. Recently, the Dalit uprising after the Una thrashing incident had also dented the party’s image. Graft charges levelled against Anandiben’s daughter Anar Patel by opposition Congress only added to her woes. Will BJP send Amit Shah back in Gujarat to repair the damages? Let’s wait and watch.
