After his escape to Japan by ship, Rash Behari Bose had to live most in hiding as the British spies who had instructions to either catch him or to eliminate him were eyeing him. In order to protect him, the Soma family of Nakamuraya Bakery offered their eldest daughter to him in marriage so that he can move around in ease. Though a Japanese by birth, she shared all the troubles that Bose had to experience.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was working in the District Congress Committee, in Allahabad during the freedom struggle for a monthly salary of Rs.15/=. During the Quit India days, the party collected funds for its agitation.
When he went home for lunch one day, he asked his wife to contribute any amount for the party’s program of the agitation. Immediately she gave him an amount of Rs.25. Surprised by that, he enquired about the source of the amount, to which she replied that it was her savings of five months. Lal Bahadur accepted the amount, returned to office and added it to the fund collection.
Next work he had immediately do was to draft a letter to the party requesting for reduction of his monthly salary to Rs.10/=.
